The Property Ombudsman has expelled Musgrove & Co, Tothill Residential Surveying Ltd and Coles Property Management from its redress scheme after the businesses did not pay consumer compensation awards.

The unpaid awards totalled more than £1,000, according to Property Wire's report on the expulsions. The source did not provide a breakdown of the awards by company or consumer.

Redress schemes provide a route for consumers to pursue complaints against participating property businesses and can issue compensation awards. Expulsion removes the firms from the scheme following the reported non-payment.

For property professionals and consumers, the case underlines the practical value of checking which redress arrangements apply to an agent, surveyor or property manager before entering into an instruction or management agreement.
